What is Click-through Rate (CTR)?

Click-through Rate (CTR) is a digital marketing metric that measures the percentage of people who click on a specific link, ad, or search result out of the total number of people who saw it (impressions).

It evaluates how compelling and relevant your headline, ad copy, image, or call-to-action (CTA) is to your target audience.

How to calculate CTR?

CTR = Total Clicks divided by Total Impressions multiplied by 100

Average Benchmarks by Channel

CTR varies widely depending on the platform, industry, and placement:

Channel Typical CTR Range Key Drivers
Search Ads (Google Ads) 3% – 6%+ High purchase intent, relevance to search query
Display / Banner Ads 0.35% – 0.5% Low intent, audience passive while browsing
Organic Search (SEO) 25% – 30% (for Position 1) Top search position, strong page title and meta description
Email Marketing 2% – 5% Subject line hook, clear single call-to-action

Why does CTR matter?

  • Ad Rank & Costs: Platforms like Google Ads use CTR as a primary component of Quality Score. Higher CTRs lower your Cost-Per-Click (CPC) and improve ad placement.
  • Content Relevance: A low CTR signals that your messaging, visuals, or targeting miss the audience's immediate interest or needs.
  • SEO Performance: Higher CTRs on search engine results pages (SERPs) signal search engines that your result is relevant to the user's intent.
