What is algorithm in social media?

In social media, an algorithm is an automated decision-making engine that determines what content appears on a user's screen and in what order.

How social media algorithms work?

Rather than showing posts in simple reverse-chronological order, platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and X use algorithms to rank thousands of user posts using specific data signals:

  • Your Direct Actions: What you like, comment on, save, share, or search for.
  • Watch Time & Retention: How many seconds you pause on a photo or whether you watch a short-form video to completion.
  • Relationships & Recency: Accounts you message or interact with frequently, plus how recently the content was published.
  • Lookalike Behaviors: What other users with interests similar to yours are enjoying.

Why platforms use them?

  1. Information Filtering: Billions of posts are uploaded daily. Without filtering, your feed would be an unreadable firehose of noise.
  2. User Retention: By showing content tailored specifically to your taste, platforms keep you scrolling longer.
  3. Ad Targeting: Higher screen time and refined user profiles allow platforms to serve more relevant ads.

What are the key impacts of algorithms on users and creators?

  • Echo Chambers: By prioritizing content you agree with or interact with, algorithms can place you in a niche of similar viewpoints.
  • Viral Reach: Creators don't need millions of followers to go viral; if the algorithm detects strong initial watch time and engagement, it pushes the content to broader feeds.
  • Feed Personalization: No two users see the exact same feed, even if they follow the exact same accounts.
